Concrete naturally shrinks as it cures and moves with temperature. Control joints are positioned to encourage movement to occur at planned locations, although no external concrete can be guaranteed never to crack.
Finished levels and drainage are also planned carefully so surface water moves away from buildings and does not collect across the driveway or patio.
